Effective Traditional Anti-Microbial Herbs: Part #2
In our last blog, we discussed the effectiveness of garlic
and turmeric as traditional anti-microbial herbs. This week let’s discuss the effects of Ginger and German
Chamomile.
Ginger:
Ginger can be used as an anti-microbial agent
because of its ability to treat infections in the body. The root or rhizome of
ginger contains two substances essential for treating acute and chronic
inflammation. These are phenols and gingerols. Ginger also has an
anti-inflammatory active property that heals inflammation within the body.
It is very effective against E. coli and Salmonella,
both of which are food-borne bacteria that can cause significant infections in
people. It is even used to treat and cure ulcers. Ginger tea is brewed by
preparing the infusion of ginger using the fresh root or the dried and ground
root and water. Ginger infusion is made by boiling the ginger slices in water.
Addition of raw honey is one of the best ways to keep cold and cough at bay. Candied
ginger is used as a medicine against ulcers and infectious microorganisms. Other
diseases that can be treated using ginger are inflammatory diseases, including
rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia, gout, and osteoarthritis.
German Chamomile:
Chamomile are of many types, but the 2 commonly occurring
ones are German chamomile, known as Matricaria chamomilla or M. recutita, and Roman chamomile, known
as Chamaemelum nobile.
It is appeared as flowering plant but was later recognized
to have a potent medicinal property, particularly when it used against skin and
dental infections. The German Commission E Monographs approve German chamomile
as a skin treatment for microbial infections. Researchers studied the
antimicrobial activity of a German chamomile extract against the fungus Candida albicans and the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis. Candida albicans is a common fungus
associated with yeast infections, and E.
faecalis is an antibiotic-resistant organism that causes severe dental infection.
One study claims that high-potency chamomile extract may help kill dental infectious
microbes.
